Vic anglers hooked on record fish restockings

by Bradley 28th Sep 2011

The Victorian Government has stocked more than two million native fish into Victorian lakes
and rivers to improve inland angling opportunities for recreational fishers.

Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Peter Walsh was at Lake Eildon today to help
release some of the broodstock kept at the Snobs Creek hatchery to breed the young fish.

“This is a record: never before have two million fish been released into Victoria’s waterways,”
Mr Walsh said.

“The fish – including golden perch, Murray cod, Australian bass, silver perch, trout cod and
Macquarie perch – were stocked across more than 80 lakes and rivers. Anglers will soon be
reaping the rewards with most expected to be of a catchable size within two years.”

Mr Walsh said the recovery of drought-affected fisheries had been prioritised, with extra funds
from recreational fishing licence revenue used to boost stocking numbers.

“These stockings are a boon for communities such as Lake Eildon and Snobs Creek which
benefit greatly from the social and economic activity inland fishing generates,” Mr Walsh said.

“A report prepared for VRFish estimates that, in north east Victoria alone, the recreational
fishing industry creates 1100 jobs and an annual turnover of almost $178 million.

“About 1.1 million golden perch, or yellowbelly, were stocked with the majority released into
Lake Eildon (200,000), Nagambie Lakes (200,000), Lake Hume (150,000), Lake Eppalock
(70,000), Loddon River (50,000), Campaspe River (40,000), Kangaroo Lake (20,000) and
Taylor Lake at Horsham (40,000).

“More than 800,000 Murray cod were also released over summer, nearly double the previous
record of this iconic freshwater species. The increase in Murray cod can largely be attributed
to the start of a three-year program to stock one million Murray cod into Lake Eildon.”

Other Murray cod stockings include Lake Eppalock (110,000), Nagambie Lake (50,000),
Loddon River (20,000), Gunbower Creek (20,000), Avoca River, (10,000), Meran Lake
(20,000), Cairn Curran Reservoir (30,000), Kangaroo Lake (20,000) and Lake Boga (15,000).

Mr Walsh said more than 102,000 Australian bass, 36,000 silver perch and smaller numbers
of trout cod and Macquarie perch were also released.

New Era 5/6 weight fly reels just arrived.

by Bradley 27th Sep 2011

The New Era is unique amongst the fly reels and now it is now available in the 5/6 size. It’s the only interchangeable cartridge fully machined aluminium fly reel. The New Era comes with 2 spare colour coded cartridges and in a matter of mere seconds a new flyline can be changed, simply by undoing a self retaining spool cap, the spool can be removed, no tools, no loose parts and definitely no time lost on the water! With each cartridge locking firmly in place, they are entirely reversible, made from precision machined aluminium and finished off with colour coded anodising.  This is system is the fly reel anglers have been waiting for.

Daiwa’s new fly reel is perfectly suited to all fly situations, its ultra smooth performance is powered by corrosion resistant components and stainless steel ball bearings. New Era will handle just about anything that swims from mountain stream trout to oceanic speedsters like tuna or sailfish, and to make sure your tippet won’t part its backed by one of the best drags available. The oversized disc drag system uses carbon washers for smooth powerful line release, and it is quickly adjusted by an ultra large knurled, easy grip dial.

Saltiga Sacrifice II Stick just arrived

by Bradley 22nd Sep 2011

The new Sacrifice II Stick re-defines the design of the high speed jig. Tested extensively through Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand, it has proved tremendous as an excellent high speed jig for Kingfish, Samson fish, Tuna etc

Daiwa has redeveloped the revolutionary Resist Wing edge previously only ever seen in the original Sacrifice Stick from many years ago, to produce a new design that resists water drag more efficiently than any other jig yet still retain an action. The new centre balanced Resist Wing edge is sharper, forcing water pressure away from the jig thus allowing for smoother less drag but also causing the jig to slide left to right.

Using only the finest materials Sacrifice II has an extreme fish attracting finish called “Magma”, looking like lava this surface is highly reflective and will reflect light even in the deepest waters. Coated with a high impact epoxy finish to resist damage, the jig also uses  a super strong one piece stainless steel internal wire and a highly compressed lead main body that both help to minimize any jig from bending

Saltiga Sacrifice II Stick SL just arrived

by Bradley 22nd Sep 2011

The new Sacrifice II Stick SL is the new cross over jig from Daiwa, half way between the legendary sacrifice Stick and the Sacrifice Leaf, it’s both a high or low speed jig all wrapped up in one . Tested extensively through Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand, it has proved tremendous as an excellent for Kingfish, Samson fish, Tuna and numerous bottom dwellers.

Using the best from both jigs Daiwa has redeveloped the revolutionary Resist Wing edge previously only ever seen in the original Sacrifice Stick from many years ago, to produce a new design that resists water drag more efficiently than any other fat wide jig. The original Leaf design has allowed for lower balance to be super fast sinking and the Resist Wing edge is sharper, forcing water pressure away from the jig thus allowing for smoother less drag but also causing the jig to flutter and slide left to right at any speed.

Using only the finest materials Sacrifice SL has an extreme fish attracting 3-Dimensional finish (3D), making the lure look larger underwater and the 3d finish reflects light even in the deepest waters. Coated with a high impact epoxy finish to resist damage, the jig also uses  a super strong one piece stainless steel internal wire and a highly compressed lead main body that both help to minimize any jig from bending.

Coalition abolishes bag limits on redfin in Victoria

by Bradley 22nd Sep 2011

The Victorian Coalition Government has abolished the recreational bag limit for redfin in Victoria resolving a frustrating cross border anomaly for recreational fishers.
Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Peter Walsh said from today it wouldn’t matter whether anglers were fishing in NSW or Victorian waters, they could keep as many redfin as they could catch.
“Redfin are a popular species among freshwater anglers because they are a tasty table-fish, however there is increasing evidence that redfin are harmful to native fish and other popular sport fish such as trout,” Mr Walsh said. “Abolishing catch limits on redfin will assist in managing the high number of them in our lakes and rivers and actually improve the quality of the redfin fishery in many waterways.
“Redfin populations in some lakes can become so abundant that growth of individuals becomes limited by competition amongst siblings.
“Removing the bag limit will improve many redfin fisheries by reducing the competition and allowing some individuals to grow to a larger size, more desired by freshwater anglers.”
Mr Walsh said the move would bring Victoria into line with regulations in NSW.  “The difference has been a source of frustration for fishers, who sometimes get caught out when they are moving between NSW and Victorian waters,” Mr Walsh said.  “Redfin populations are widespread but better known waters include lakes such as Eildon, Hume, Eppalock and Fyans and the Loddon, Campaspe and Wimmera rivers. Several other waters that have recently recovered from the drought also support booming redfin fisheries. “We are conscious however of the impact the species has on other valued native and sport fish such as trout and salmon,” Mr Walsh said.
The decision to remove the bag limit of 30 redfin has received support from VR Fish and fishers who attended recent Regional Recreational Fishing Forums.

Black Label Versatile series just arrived.

by Bradley 13th Sep 2011

The Black Label Versatile series has just arrived and will be shipped to stores soon.

The Black Label “Versatile” series of rods is designed as the all-rounder style series. These rods can be used for the majority of fishing methods in particular with hard body lures like crankbaits, vibrations, topwaters etc

The design of the Black Label Versatile series is the same as the Technical series, concentrating on high performance. They have similar cosmetic styling, but the Versatile series combines a soft tip action and lifting power with superior hook setting power to produce a rod that is perfectly suited for all hard body and soft plastic fishing techniques… As a result we have designed a “versatile “rod series that produces superior performance far beyond our competitors, yet still featuring quality componentry like Fuji SIC guides, Daiwa surround hold reel seats and ultra tough and light EVA grips, all this at a fraction of our competitor’s price.

Black Label Technical Series just arrived.

by Bradley 13th Sep 2011

The Black label Technical series has just arrived and will be shipped to stores soon.

The Black Label “Skippin”.”Shootin”.”Shaky” series were designed for aggressive fishing techniques like the “skipping” method used to throw a lure to overhangs or under boat docks/ piers and “shooting” method to directly throw a lure to fish located on a fish finder or structure. Also due to the ultra fast and sensitive action they are able to dance a soft plastic lure to attract fish – “shaking style”.

When Daiwa designs and tries to reduce cost of a rod, normally we simply reduce a similar ratio form each cost categories like blanks, guides, handles etc. But, in this instance we concentrated on blank design to gain the highest performance. Black Label is similar to our flagship rod range – Steez. While Steez concentrates on being light weight, Black Label concentrates on high performance, it has similar cosmetic styling but the blanks design emphasis combines lifting power with superior hook setting power. As a result we have designed a rod series that produces superior performance far beyond our competitors, yet still featuring quality componentry like Fuji SIC guides, Daiwa surround hold reel seats and triple A grade cork handles, all this at a fraction of our competitor’s price.

Murray cod stocking a tourism boost for North East

by Bradley 5th Sep 2011

The Department of Primary Industries has stocked 35,000 Murray cod fingerlings into the Goulburn River to encourage anglers back to areas devastated by the 2009 bushfires.
Fisheries Victoria Executive Director Anthony Hurst said the Murray cod fingerlings purchased with the Victorian Government’s bushfire recovery funds were stocked into the Goulburn River between Seymour and Yea.
Mr Hurst said the stockings were another way that Fisheries Victoria’s could help the local community recover from the lingering impact of the Black Saturday fires.
“Recreational fishing makes an important contribution to regional economies because visiting anglers and their families buy tackle, food, fuel and ice and stay in local accommodation,” Mr Hurst said.
“Encouraging anglers back to North East Victoria through fish stocking is one way we can contribute to the on-going bushfire recovery efforts.”
Mr Hurst said the Goulburn River between Yea and Seymour had the potential to be a first-class native fishery for Murray cod.
“This reach of the river boasts rich in-stream habitat in the form of timber snags and features good access for anglers,” he said.
“The river also produces great fishing for trout and redfin, but had declined as a native fishery, so boosting Murray cod numbers should provide additional variety for fishers in years to come when they reach legal size.”
Signs showing river access points are located at bridge crossings and reserves between Molesworth and Seymour to help visitors find a good fishing spot.
Anglers are reminded that the three month Murray cod closed season commenced on 1 September.
