New SJ Shore jigging rods debut

by Bradley 12th Aug 2011

SJ is the ultimate power casting series now available from Daiwa’s extensive range of shore based lure fishing rods.

Designed for rocky shore and beach based lure fishing for large fish like kingfish, tuna, mackerel etc, its ultra light design delivers incredible stopping power to even the toughest fish.

The secret to SJ’s power revolves around the blank. By using a 97% carbon blank with a soft tip and ultra power butt section, these rods are designed to load from the tip to the butt so to provide maximum power to a hooked fish while they are also able to cast heavier metals, sliders, poppers etc with ease.

To deliver the incredible power to the blank, SJ uses Fuji’s epoch making guide system, SIC “K” guides, these guides dramatically reduce line wrap, dissipate line heat and improve line speed for faster more accurate casting. Added to this these rods feature Fuji graphite reel seats, locking rings, custom alloy componentry and ultra tough EVA grips with a grooved fore grip for added grip.

SJ – the ultimate casting power performance for stopping monsters from the stones.

Ultimate casting innovation…..the easiest way to describe Daiwa’s latest shore lure casting rods, Lateo Pirates. Designed for rocky shore and beach based lure fishing, Lateo’s unique design provides unparalleled casting performance.

Lateo employs Daiwa’s unique Japanese designed HVF (high volume fibre) carbon blank, these rods are designed to load from the tip to the butt for maximum power and fast casting acceleration. A minimalist approach in design was used deliberately to eliminate any extra weight, grips and blank cosmetics are almost nonexistent.

But the blank isn’t everything that improves casting performance.  Lateo uses Fuji’s epoch making guide system, alconite “K” guides, these guides dramatically reduce line wrap and improve line speed for faster more accurate casting. Added to this these rods feature customized Fuji graphite reel seats, custom alloy componentry and minimalist ultra tough EVA grips to reduce weight for high speed casting acceleration.

KEEP WESTERN AUSTRALIA FISHING

by Bradley 6th Jun 2011

Have your say on the draft plan for marine parks in Commonwealth waters in the South-West.

Thanks to the hard work of Recfishwest and the WA rec fishing community at long last we appear to have a marine park plan that actually makes sense and acknowledges the importance of recreational fishing and our minimal impact on fish stocks and the environment. The most significant recreational fishing spots have been retained as multi-use zones in what will be Australia’s largest marine park. Yet still this is not enough for the green extremists who simply want destroy recreational fishing regardless of the scientific evidence.
We must act together to save recreational fishing in WA by calling on Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke to stand firm against demands for more marine closures and defend the Aussie lifestyle!

FISHING IDEAS WANTED FROM REEL VICTORIANS

by Bradley 7th Mar 2011

Recreational anglers can ‘have their say’ about fisheries management issues at 12 roundtable forums
being held across Victoria in May and June.
This is the third year that Fisheries Victoria has toured regional Victoria listening to anglers and updating
them about what is happening with their fisheries.

Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Anthony Hurst said last year’s forums had generated dozens of good ideas.
“We have taken many of these ideas on board and implemented them,” Mr Hurst said.
“These include stocking larger numbers of freshwater fish or stocking more frequently and planning to build
more fishing reefs like those off Frankston, Seaford and Aspendale.

“The first meeting will be at Frankston Yacht Club on Wednesday, May 11 and the final one at the Bendigo
Legion Angling Club on Thursday, June 30.

“These meetings are a great way for anglers to suggest improvements for their sport.
Come along and learn more about developing new fisheries, fish stocking in waters recovering from
drought and floods, what local Fisheries Officers have been doing and infrastructure improvements in your
area such as fish cleaning tables and fishing platforms.

“We want all fishers to contribute new project ideas that enhance fishing across the state,” Mr Hurst said.

Don’t put your life on the line this summer

by Bradley 7th Jan 2011

NSW Rockfishers are being reminded that safety, not fish should come first, when dropping a line over summer, NSW Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan said today.

“Rock fishing is a favourite sport for many recreational fishers in NSW, but unfortunately it’s one that can prove very dangerous,” Mr Whan said.

“This summer, don’t become a statistic. Rockfishers should make sure they always put their safety ahead of landing the catch of the day.”

The NSW Government funds a number of important safety programs through the NSW Recreational Fishing trust to further educate and assist rock fishers in NSW to help keep them safe.

This includes:

• the Angel ring program, with more than 100 life buoys installed at popular rockfishing spots along the NSW coast. The program is administered by the NSW Branch of the Australian National Sports Fishing Association (ANSA).

• A series of workshops to educate rockfishers, especially of a non-English speaking background, of some simple safety measures coordinated by the Recreational fishing Alliance of NSW and Surf Life Saving Australia.

• the production and distribution of the successful Rockfishing Safety resource folder. The folders include DVD’s on how to rockfish safely, translated into Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese, which are distributed free of charge to anglers.

• a research study by the Royal Life Saving Society to identify and examine recreational fishing related deaths, including rock fishing, since 2002.

The NSW Government has also provided additional funding of $90,000 to extend these programs, including distributing multilingual safety information to recreational fishing licence holders and signage at angel ring locations.

ANSA Angel Ring Program Coordinator Stan Konstantaras said despite the wide-ranging safety programs, it was disappointing that rock fishing deaths continue to occur.

“Rockfishing deaths are on the rise because many are inexperienced anglers who fish during dangerous conditions,” Mr Konstantaras said.

“Fishing is fun – but it should never be at the expense of your life.

“Always rockfish with a lifejacket, check the weather and tidal conditions prior to going out, wear the right clothing and footwear, fish with other people, and tell someone of your fishing plans.”

Mr Whan said the NSW Government also urges those going rock fishing to use common sense and check the swell and tide conditions prior to going.

Further information on rockfishing safety, including coastal reports, Maritime alerts and multilingual brochures, can be found at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/saltwater/safety or www.safefishing.com.au.

Vic Fishing Licenses Funding New Projects

by Bradley 13th Dec 2010

Revenue from the sale of recreational fishing licences continues to fund projects that
improve angling opportunities throughout Victoria, with a further 14 grants provided
through the Small Grants Program.

Half of the projects involve promoting recreational fishing to children through active
participation while others focus on research and minor infrastructure development.

Since its launch in March 2010, the Small Grants Program has funded 45 projects worth
more than $141,000. The program is open year round for small grants up to $5,000.

Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria, Anthony Hurst, said the 14 projects ranged from
junior clinics in regional centres to education products aimed at increasing awareness of
revised regulations.

The 14 projects are:

$5,000 to assess fish populations in the Anglesea River after recent fish deaths

$4,960 to conduct a ‘Junior Fishing Day’ event at Corinella Jetty

$4,560 to evaluate pipi stocks in the Cape Liptrap Coastal Park

$2,500 to co-fund 2,000 pipi buckets to promote the reduced bag limit at Cape
Liptrap Coastal Park

$4,500 to conduct a ‘Learn to Fish’ convention at Lakes Entrance

$3,950 to conduct a ‘Mates Day on the Bay’ fishing event

$3,664 to conduct six ‘fishing for diversity’ events at Barwon Heads

$3,400 to conduct a ‘Family Fishing Day’ at the 2011 St Kilda Festival

$2,965 to replace parts of the fishing platform at Deep Lake Recreation Reserve

$1,900 to conduct a ‘Student Fishing Day’ at the Curdies River

$1,975 to conduct a ‘Junior Fishing Clinic’ at Lake Boga

$1,530 to conduct a ‘Junior Angler Workshop’ at Kyabram

$1,215 to co-fund a pilot program to install fishing line disposal bins at 21
locations around Port Phillip Bay and

$1,425 to conduct a Family Surf Fishing tuition day at Venus Bay.
“These projects are terrific examples of ‘your fishing licence fees at work’ to improve
recreational angling opportunities and I encourage any organisation to consider applying
for a grant,” Mr Hurst said.

Since its inception in 2001, the Recreational Fishing Grants Program has funded over
345 projects worth more than $13.5 million. For more information or to apply for a Small
Grant, visit www.dpi.vic.gov.au/fishing/feesatwork
