Almost 700,000 trout and salmon were stocked into 135 waters last year by the Victorian Coalition Government to improve fishing opportunities for freshwater fishers.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh said 2011 was a big year for trout production at the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Snobs Creek fish hatchery, as many lakes had filled following drought-breaking rains and were in terrific condition to be stocked.
“Several of our newly filled lakes produced outstanding fishing last year so it made sense to stock them again with help from revenue obtained through the sale of recreational fishing licences,” Mr Walsh said.
The stand-out performer in 2011 was Lake Bolac, which produced large numbers of rainbow trout between 2kg and 3kg.
Other standout performers last year were Lake Tooliorook, Hepburn Lagoon and Lake Elingamite which provided exceptional trout fishing for fly, bait and lure anglers.
Further afield, several waters received trout for the first time in years including Lake Toolondo in the Wimmera, which was once one of Victoria’s most productive and popular trout fisheries. It was stocked with 40,000 brown trout and 5,000 rainbow trout.
“Before the drought, Lake Toolondo was known to produce brown trout over 4kg so there are many people hoping our stocking pays dividends in years to come,” Mr Walsh said.
Lake Marma, near Murtoa, and Pykes Creek Reservoir, near Ballan, were also additions to the stocking list in 2011, receiving 1,000 and 5,000 trout respectively.
All trout stocked this year were produced at the Snobs Creek hatchery which has greatly benefited from recent upgrades.

Trout produced from the Department of Primary Industries’ freshwater hatchery at Snobs
Creek are the equal of their Tasmanian cousins.
Some anglers have historically questioned the genetic integrity of Victorian rainbow trout
compared to their interstate counterparts, however new findings dispel that myth once and for
all.
Acting Fisheries Victoria Executive Director Jon Presser said new research funded by
recreational fishing licence fees showed Victorian trout grew and thrived just as well as trout
in Tasmania. “The research demonstrates the quality of the fish being bred by Fisheries Victoria is equal to
any in Australia, with nearly 460,000 rainbow trout stocked last year,” Mr Presser said.
The three year scientific trial compared the performance of Victorian strain rainbow trout
produced at Snobs Creek with Tasmanian strain fish sourced from the Great Lake population
at Liawenee. The rainbow trout were fin clipped by Fisheries Victoria staff to distinguish them and released
into privately owned catch and release lakes outside Ballarat.
Expert anglers who fish these lakes regularly monitored the performance of the rainbow trout
and kept detailed records of their catches. To ensure the trial was not biased, even the owners of the lakes did not know the origin of the
trout stocked in their waters. The results showed the Snobs Creek trout performed almost identically to the Tasmanian fish
with similar longevity, growth rates and catchability. Both strains survived until they were three to four years old when the trial ended.
Mr Presser said the results were good news for thousands of Victorian anglers who had been
enjoying bumper trout fishing in many lakes that were stocked with rainbow trout from Snobs
Creek following the drought breaking rains of this year and last.
“Many of these rainbow trout are growing exceptionally well in these lakes with many fish now
weighing over 1.2kg,” Mr Presser said.
The long awaited Freams will be instores this week. For more information on these reels click here.

The introduction of the new Airtorque range will set a new standard for delivering high performance rods without high prices. Using the latest carbon design available and by combining 30 tonne carbon with a micro pitch taper, Airtorque delivers an incredibly light and powerful yet amazingly strong blank that will stop literally any light tackle sportfish.
But a blank isn’t everything and that’s why Airtorque employs Fuji’s new alconite “K” guides, these guides dramatically reduce line wrap and improve line speed for faster more accurate casting. Added to this Daiwa uses customized Fuji ACS/VSS reel seats, custom alloy componentry and ultra tough EVA grips, to produce a highly spec’d rod series that has never been available at this price level ever before.

The newly designed body on the Yogiri creates an incredibly stable wobbling action that tracks straight in slow to rapid moving water or when cranking at any speed. This highly responsive stable wobbling action attracts predatory fish from long distances and is ideal for dirty water situations where vibration is the key to getting strikes.
The Yogiri imitates many of the small shad shaped baitfish that inhabits many of our freshwater and coastal waterways. The range of ultra realistic colors and patterns are a true testament to Japanese design, these lures imitate baitfish perfectly and are highly recommended for clear water fishing where fish are commonly intimidated by bright or flashy colors or patterns. Its superior casting abilities is ideal for estuarine flats, trundling mountain river runs to pinpoint casting to snags for bream, trout and estuary perch.
Handmade to the highest standards, these lures feature 3D realistic eyes, ultra sharp chemically sharpened trebles and realistic natural colors/pattern

The trout fishery at Lake Wendouree is well on its way to a full recovery following years of drought.
The lake was stocked in spring last year and has been receiving more trout this winter from
Fisheries Victoria’s hatchery at Snobs Creek, near Eildon.
Acting Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria, Mark Edwards, said the 90,000 rainbow trout
fingerlings released in November 2010 have grown very well.
“Anglers are reporting these rainbow trout now measure 35-40cm and are in great condition,” MrEdwards said.“The rainbow trout were part of our rapid response to rebuilding drought affected fisheries usingrevenue from the sale of recreational fishing licences.
“We have continued to rebuild Lake Wendouree in recent months releasing 10,000 larger
‘yearling’ brown trout. These are bigger than the fingerling size rainbows stocked last spring.
“This year’s allocation of 10,000 rainbow trout, also yearlings, will be stocked during August.”
Mr Edwards said the 20,000 trout put into Lake Wendouree this year would be a significant
contribution to the fishery’s overall recovery and would be warmly welcomed by Ballarat anglers.
Anglers are reminded that Lake Wendouree is open to fishing year round.
The closed season that applies to rivers does not apply to lakes.

The Department of Primary Industries recently stocked more than 16,000 Atlantic salmon into
two South West Victorian lakes to boost recreational fishing opportunities.
Fisheries Victoria Executive Director Anthony Hurst said 8,160 Atlantic salmon were released
into Lake Bullen Merri and 8,500 into Lake Purrumbete, both near Camperdown.
“The crater lakes of Purrumbete and Bullen Merri are popular freshwater fisheries with well
deserved reputations for producing quality trout and salmon,” Mr Hurst said.
“Each lake received a mix of yearling 30-60 gram salmon and two-year-old fish averaging
more than 200 grams.”
Mr Hurst said the two lakes were stocked annually with brown trout and rainbow trout, and
also received Chinook salmon when available.
“We have stocked Atlantic salmon this year to maintain a salmon interest in these crater lakes
and as an interim arrangement until Chinook salmon become available again.”
Atlantic salmon were stocked into Lake Bullen Merri and Lake Purrumbete between 2002 and
2005.
Mr Hurst said the most recent salmon stockings would provide anglers with some great new
angling opportunities.
Last year, Fisheries Victoria stocked more than 700,000 trout into waterways throughout the
state.

Recreational anglers are enjoying terrific trout fishing in many lakes and reservoirs thanks to
fish stockings undertaken late last year after heavy rains.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh said the Department of Primary Industries
(DPI) had moved swiftly in order to take advantage of the end of the drought.
“In order to capitalise on good rainfall last year, 187,500 trout were sourced at short notice
from DPI’s Snobs Creek hatchery and private hatcheries last spring,” Mr Walsh said.
“This was a quick response to kick-start these fisheries after years of prolonged drought.
“Many of these fish were rainbow trout released as fingerlings, while others were much larger
yearling trout of around 50 grams each.”
Mr Walsh said in 2010 Fisheries Victoria stocked nearly 2.4 million fish including more than
706,000 trout.
“Anglers will continue to benefit from restocking programs funded through both recreational
fishing licence fees and the $16.2 million the Victorian Coalition Government has set aside to
improve opportunities for Victoria’s recreational fishers,” Mr Walsh said.
VRFish chairman Geoff Cramer said last year’s rapid stocking response had delivered the
goods for freshwater anglers already with the yearling stockings paying off most of all.
“Anderson’s Lagoon, near Ballarat, was the standout performer. Big numbers of rainbow trout
between 800 grams and 1kg have been caught from Anderson’s (otherwise known as
Hepburn’s Lagoon), just five months after release,” Mr Cramer said.
“Newlyn Reservoir was another big improver with rainbow trout between 500 and 700 grams
being landed, while Bostock Reservoir, near Ballan, yielded rainbows up to 500 grams.
“Greenhill Lake, near Ararat, was producing some rainbow trout up to 1 kg while anglers have
also enjoyed success at Tullaroop Reservoir, Lake Elingamite and Deep Lake further south.”
Mr Cramer said anglers were very happy to see more than $181,000 of recreational fishing
licence revenue funding the drought recovery stockings.
The Black Label “Skippin”.”Shootin”.”Shaky” series were designed for aggressive fishing techniques like the “skipping” method used to throw a lure to overhangs or under boat docks/ piers and “shooting” method to directly throw a lure to fish located on a fish finder or structure. Also due to the ultra fast and sensitive action they are able to dance a soft plastic lure to attract fish – “shaking style”.
When Daiwa designs and tries to reduce cost of a rod, normally we simply reduce a similar ratio form each cost categories like blanks, guides, handles etc. But, in this instance we concentrated on blank design to gain the highest performance. Black Label is similar to our flagship rod range – Steez. While Steez concentrates on being light weight, Black Label concentrates on high performance, it has similar cosmetic styling but the blanks design emphasis combines lifting power with superior hook setting power. As a result we have designed a rod series that produces superior performance far beyond our competitors, yet still featuring quality componentry like Fuji SIC guides, Daiwa surround hold reel seats and triple A grade cork handles, all this at a fraction of our competitor’s price.
For more inforamtion click here.
The Black Label “Versatile” series of rods is designed as the all-rounder style series. These rods can be used for the majority of fishing methods in particular with hard body lures like crankbaits, vibrations, topwaters etc
The design of the Black Label Versatile series is the same as the Technical series, concentrating on high performance. They have similar cosmetic styling, but the Versatile series combines a soft tip action and lifting power with superior hook setting power to produce a rod that is perfectly suited for all hard body and soft plastic fishing techniques… As a result we have designed a “versatile “rod series that produces superior performance far beyond our competitors, yet still featuring quality componentry like Fuji SIC guides, Daiwa surround hold reel seats and ultra tough and light EVA grips, all this at a fraction of our competitor’s price.

Member for Benalla, Bill Sykes said today anglers and members of the public can now enjoy improved access to the upper Goulburn River following the upgrading of access points at four key sites directly downstream of Eildon.
Dr Sykes said the one boat ramp and three angler access points had eroded over time and urgently required investment to bring them back to a good working condition.
“This stretch of the Goulburn River is one of Victoria’s most popular trout fisheries and the access points will create new fishing opportunities,” Dr Sykes said.
“The access point upgrades were funded through the Victorian Government’s bushfire recovery program which continues to invest funds to help attract recreational anglers and tourists back to bushfire affected areas.
“These regions have suffered from drought and bushfires in recent years and rely heavily on income from visiting anglers.
“North-eastern Victoria and in particular the Goulburn River provide world class recreational fishing opportunities and makes a significant contribution to regional tourism, particularly in the Shire of Murrindindi.”
Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Peter Walsh said the infrastructure investment would complement increased fish stocking in Lake Eildon, the Eildon Pondage and the Goulburn River in recent times.
“So far Fisheries Victoria has invested over $230,000 as part of the bushfire recovery project over a number of areas, including stocking,” Mr Walsh said.
The repair and upgrade program was done in collaboration with the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority.
Fisheries Victoria is pleased that local contractors were able to be engaged to undertake the works.
The upgraded access points are found at the following locations between the Eildon Pondage and Thornton; Point Hill Reserve, Walnuts Reserve and two sites at the Eildon Pondage wall.

The annual closed season for trout and salmon fishing begins at midnight on Monday June 13
and will run until September 2.
Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria, Anthony Hurst, said during this period anglers were
not permitted to take or possess trout or salmon in rivers and streams throughout Victoria,
with the exception of waters classed as ‘sea-run trout rivers’. (table below).
Sea-run trout rivers are those coastal streams which run into the ocean and provide the
opportunity for trout to move between the freshwater and oceans.
“In addition, all hook and line fishing is prohibited in the tailrace sections of the Goulburn,
Mitta Mitta, Tanjil and Kiewa rivers regardless of the species being targeted,” Mr Hurst said.
“Anglers who target fish in these waters risk prosecution and significant fines.
“There will still be plenty of good fishing options for trout in Victoria in the many lakes and
impoundments which are stocked with rainbow and brown trout that are grown at the DPI
Snobs Creek hatchery near Eildon.”
During the cooler months of June through to September trout and salmon make their way
upstream to spawn in the shallow gravel beds of our streams and rivers.
The recent rainfall in Victoria has seen many popular trout rivers and streams that were
severely impacted by drought once again return to healthy flows, able to support strong
populations of trout again.
“The coming 2011 spawning season is vital for the recovery of wild populations of trout
species which will deliver excellent fishing opportunities and the associated economic
benefits to local communities over the next few years,” Mr Hurst said.
If you suspect illegal fishing activity, call the fisheries offence reporting line on 13-FISH (13
3474).

The new Freams heralds a giant leap forward in reel innovation. In 2010 Daiwa introduced Magseal in its flagship spinning reels – Saltiga and Certate, this incredible innovation introduced the most technically advanced spinning reel design ever. Though this system is superb it is not that economical to introduce into lower price spinning reels. Daiwa recognized this and developed another system that would suit these reels and called it ‘Oil Seal”.
Available mid winter 2011.

Daiwa’s technically advanced reels can should be complimented the ultimate sports fishing rods, rods that there was no compromise in technology and expenditure spared to develop the worlds most advanced designs.
Steez rods utilize the famous Bias Construction diagonal ply design, to create a finer diameter blank that resists twisting, eliminating stress, creating better casting accuracy and greater hook setting power, to produce a blank with maximum density yet extremely light, powerful and sensitive. Each blank is constructed of different carbon material to suit a specific fishing style.
The new Megatop series is a revolution in sensitivity as it takes it to an all new level by introducing Daiwa’s incredible new SVF-SPX carbon. Megatop is unlike any other ordinary solid tip construction, the new SPX material binds graphite fibres with precise resin control for an extremely even distribution of fibre. The result of this is virtually no spine in the rod tip so it bends the same angle in any direction. This allows for incredible pinpoint cast control with even the lightest of weights and its incredible transference of even the slightest bump or vibration allows for the incredible bite detection unlike any other rod.

The Gekkabijin Vib 3S is an all new “vibe”. Imitating the small shrimps that are so prevalent throughout estuaries, bays, rivers and streams, the Gekkabijin Vib 3S will definitely be one of the lures to watch on the ABT Tournament trail in 2011. Guaranteed to be a live well filler for bream, it will be equally effective on bass, trout, estuary perch or just about anything that eats small shrimp!
Unlike any other available it features a hollow plastic body, giving it a full body profile and the internal weight system causes the lure to sink nose forward to avoid snagging. On a slow crank it produces a wide wobble but speed it up and the tight high pitched wiggle attracts any predatory fish.
Handmade to the highest standards, these lures feature 3D realistic eyes, ultra sharp HD chemically sharpened treble with lifelike skirt and are painted internally with chip proof paint for an incredible lifelike finish.
Recreational anglers can ‘have their say’ about fisheries management issues at 12 roundtable forums
being held across Victoria in May and June.
This is the third year that Fisheries Victoria has toured regional Victoria listening to anglers and updating
them about what is happening with their fisheries.
Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Anthony Hurst said last year’s forums had generated dozens of good ideas.
“We have taken many of these ideas on board and implemented them,” Mr Hurst said.
“These include stocking larger numbers of freshwater fish or stocking more frequently and planning to build
more fishing reefs like those off Frankston, Seaford and Aspendale.
“The first meeting will be at Frankston Yacht Club on Wednesday, May 11 and the final one at the Bendigo
Legion Angling Club on Thursday, June 30.
“These meetings are a great way for anglers to suggest improvements for their sport.
Come along and learn more about developing new fisheries, fish stocking in waters recovering from
drought and floods, what local Fisheries Officers have been doing and infrastructure improvements in your
area such as fish cleaning tables and fishing platforms.
“We want all fishers to contribute new project ideas that enhance fishing across the state,” Mr Hurst said.

The Victorian Government today released 30,000 Murray cod fingerlings into Lake Eildon as part of its commitment to restock the lake with an additional one million fish.
Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Peter Walsh said Lake Eildon was being stocked thanks to an $800,000 project funded by fishing licence fees.
“One million cod will be released over three years, in addition to the 50,000 a year already being released,” Mr Walsh said.
“More than 380,000 Murray cod have now gone into the lake this summer stocking season, which is a native fish stocking record for any Victorian water.”
Parliamentary Secretary for Primary Industries Bill Sykes was on hand for today’s release which marks the final stage of this season’s Murray cod stocking into Lake Eildon.
Mr Walsh said the Coalition had committed to increasing funding by $4 million over the next four years in addition to returning all revenue raised from fishing licences to the recreational fishing industry.
“Lake Eildon will also be stocked with 200,000 golden perch fingerlings in autumn along with trout releases during the cooler months of 2011,” Mr Walsh said.
“These cod, perch and trout will grow very well, given the high water level and productive inundated ground that is brimming with microscopic life.”
Mr Walsh said the project, titled ‘Murray Cod Million – Lake Eildon’, also involves active monitoring by a dedicated team of volunteer anglers and fisheries scientists from Snobs Creek.
“We will track the progress of this large pulse of juvenile cod by combining expert angler feedback with formal surveys by researchers,” Mr Walsh said.
Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria Anthony Hurst said Alexandra fisheries officers had reported good angler catches of Murray cod from Lake Eildon over the last year with many fish approaching minimum size and several over 80 centimetres.
“This confirms cod stockings over the last 15 years have worked, which bodes well for the expanded approach we are adopting for the next few years.”

Freshwater anglers at Lake Wendouree have plenty to celebrate now the lake is full, trout stocking has resumed and two fishing platforms built with licence revenue can now be used.
The City of Ballarat built the northern Durham Point fishing platform many years ago, followed by another one at St Patrick’s Point, completed in 2006 when the lake was dry.
Both fishing platforms were built using $78,386 from the Recreational Fishing Grants Program, which reinvests money from the sale of fishing licences into projects that improve angling opportunities.
Built over dense bank side vegetation, the St Patrick’s Point fishing platform ensures land-based anglers have access to the deeper sections of the lake and enjoy clear casting to open water.
These platforms contribute to a broader rejuvenation program in the Lake Wendouree precinct.
With both platforms providing access for all, the City of Ballarat is improving visitor facilities for the lake, focusing on path, bridge and beach access points.
Revenue received from the sale of recreational fishing licences has also been used to stock Lake Wendouree once again.
Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria, Anthony Hurst, said the high lake level and improved water conditions allowed the release of 90,000 rainbow trout fry in November.
“We are looking forward to restoring Lake Wendouree to its former glory as one of Victoria’s most popular and productive trout fisheries,” Mr Hurst said
Since its inception in 2001, the Recreational Fishing Grants Program has funded over 345 projects, worth more than $13.5 million.
For more information about how angling licence fees are being spent to improve fishing opportunities visit www.dpi.vic.gov.au/fishing/feesatwork or ring the DPI Customer Service Centre on 136 186.
More than 187,000 trout have been stocked into formerly drought-affected lakes and reservoirs across Victoria, thanks in part to $231,000 from fishing licence revenue. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree received the majority of 90,000 rainbow trout fry stocked in November while another 75,000 brown trout fry will be released into waterways around the state this month. Peter Walsh, Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, and responsible for fisheries, said a large number of small trout had been sourced at short notice from the Department of Primary Industries’ own hatchery at Snobs Creek and other private trout hatcheries in northeast Victoria. “We have been fortunate to find so many trout available, given few growers had anticipated such a wet season after many years of lower than average rainfall,” Mr Walsh said. “To have so many lakes fill with water in one year, and to stock them so quickly, exceeded most freshwater anglers’ expectations.” Mr Walsh said anglers could look forward to improved fishing over the next few years with an increase in funding under the Coalition Government. “The Baillieu-Ryan Government has committed to returning all the revenue raised from the sale of recreational fishing licences to the industry for infrastructure works, stocking and education programs,” Mr Walsh said. “In addition, we will increase funding to the industry by $4 million over the next four years.” Other stockings into recovering waters include: . 4,000 into Greenhill Lake, near Ararat, and 2,000 into Lake Beaufort . 15,000 into Cairn Curran Reservoir near Maldon . 3,000 into Teddington (Top) Reservoir and 1,500 in Teddington (Bottom) Reservoir . 10,000 into Hepburn Lagoon and 7,000 into Newlyn Reservoir . 2,000 into Deep Lake at Derrinallum . 4,000 into Barkers Creek Reservoir, Harcourt, in addition to 1,000 stocked in June . 10,000 into Rocklands Reservoir, Balmoral, in addition to 5,000 stocked in July . 10,000 into Tullaroop Reservoir, Carisbrook …/2 . 10,000 into Tooliorook Lake, Lismore . 5,000 into Bostock Reservoir at Ballan . 5,000 into Lake Bolac . 4,000 into Batyo Catyo Lake at Rich Avon . 5,000 into Lake Burrumbeet, near Ballarat Fisheries Victoria executive director Anthony Hurst said while the trout stocking season was drawing to a close, preparations were underway for the beginning of native fish stocking season. “Several recovering lakes will receive Murray cod and golden perch this summer, so it’s an exciting time now the rain has finally come,” Mr Hurst said.
