How to Catch Bream on Infeet Slippery Dog Surface Lures

Who doesn’t love top water fishing right? Well, I for one love it and any species I can target on top water I will. Nothing like the visual experience of a fish devouring your lure off the surface. Some takes can be so incredible and top water breaming is no exception.

During the warmer months that’s when most top water fishing takes place. My favourite places to target are sand flats, shallow weedy and rocky edges or any shallow sort of area where you may find bream. Also don’t discount boat hulls and man-made structures.

The choice of lure for me is always a Infeet Slippery Dog. I use both the 65F and the 80F and they are both so effective on the bream. Don’t be steered away from using the 80F over the 65F as you will catch better quality fish on the larger sizes and even the small ones will smash them. Colour you ask? Well, if you have read any of my other blogs you will find that I am not too fussed on colour for many types of fishing and find most if not all work almost as equally as good. Although as always there’s always personal favourites that I like purely for looks. Whitebait is a cool sparkly colour that always catches my eye and clown has always been a personal favourite.

Working the Slippery Dogs may need some trial and error to see what is working on the day. But I do tend to find a popping motion with a pause in between is highly effective. This will give a good representation of a prawn popping on the surface. I find this retrieve to get the most interest and attempts, but with most top water fishing the fish can be very inaccurate and tend to miss a lot or not stick. If I am struggling to get one to stick, I will speed up the retrieve and try to get a reaction bite and the faster retrieve will tend to get the fish to stick better, most likely due to the pressure the fish is hitting the hooks versus the slow retrieve, but you may not get as much interest, so there is a trade-off.

Always use gear that’s relative to the lures and gauge hooks that are on the lure. You will find the 65F will have a much smaller lighter gauge set of trebles and stingers so in this case I will be running my lightest setup. One of my favourite combos to use is a 22 TD Zero 722ULXS matched with a 21 Caldia LT 1000 with 6lb J-Braid Grand and 6lb J-Thread X-Link Fluro. This is a super light combo that is extremely fun to fish top water with great castability. If I’m fishing a larger 80F Slippery Dog I may tend to use something a but heavier but tend to always keep it light.

Once you start top water breaming on Infeet Slippery Dogs, I am almost certain you wont target bream any other way. Highly addictive and easier enough for any fishing level.
