In 1958 Daiwa’s founder Yoshio Matsui had a vision: To create the finest quality fishing tackle on the market. His vision was fulfilled when Daiwa was established on the back of his beliefs.

Yoshio Matsui was an engineer, and an avid angler with a passion for fishing. He believed strongly in the combination of design, innovation and high quality. His passion for fishing and quality design was so strong it led him to change the world of fishing forever.

Today millions of anglers worldwide enjoy the satisfaction of owning and using a broad range of Daiwa products. Their dreams and angling milestones have been realised due to the key principles of design, innovation and quality that Yoshio Matsui founded his company upon.

Daiwa's reel producing technology is considered to be one of the best in the world, and only a few years after Daiwa was founded it soon became the "the reel of choice." Daiwa's development of the "Open-Faced reel" in 1965 was the spark that started the developmental fire.

Unlike a closed-face reel the spool was located on the outside of the reel, allowing the user to wind more line onto the spool with a faster spin and improved feel. This new reel shape and design concept shocked the world.

Daiwa first began operations in Australia in 1973 in Darlinghurst, NSW

According to Daiwa Australia’s CEO Greg Seeto:

“When Daiwa Australia began, very few people were fishing with lures, bait fishing dominated, stocked impoundment fisheries were largely non-existent, and fishing as a sport was still in its infancy.”

Now, 50 years later, Daiwa is loved by hundreds of thousands of Aussie anglers, and fishing as a sport has become one of the most popular pastimes of Australian people.

In 2004 Daiwa introduced the Real Four concept, a set of four core design principles to guide the development of their products. What makes Real Four special is its focus on four key aspects: Real Engine, Real Control, Real Endurance, and Real Custom.

The best thing about Real Four is how these four aspects work together, making Daiwa gear stand out and giving anglers better tools for their fishing adventures.

Daiwa’s most advanced carbon fibre technology was unearthed in 2007 with the debut of a new material, Zaion. A new high density carbon fibre material that exceeds metal in many design and performance aspects, Zaion has few peers in reel construction material.

In 2010, Daiwa introduced a game-changing technology to fishing reels: Magseal. It made its debut in the Certate reel, and anglers quickly realised its significance. Magseal's remarkable sealing and protective properties transformed the Certate, combining strength, smoothness, and precision.

Dale Baxter, a passionate angler from Melbourne, described magseal as a ‘must-have’ when spending time on the water. According to Dale, older reels (without a magsealed body) would wear out quickly under extreme conditions, demanding constant maintenance. With Magseal-equipped reels, that changed. They stayed in top-notch condition, enduring any environment without losing their edge.

In 2010 Daiwa also developed "Z-SVF", its lightest, most high-density carbon fibre ever. Daiwa uses Z-SVF in their rods to create some of the lightest weight rods on the market. Daiwa's carbon fibre technology has been unrivalled in the industry since its inception.

In 2022, the Australian Fishing and Tackle Association trade show saw Daiwa awarded four awards, more than any other brand who participated at the event. Daiwa scooped the awards for Best Reel, Combo, Game Fishing Accessory and Game Fishing Rod.

With an ambitious goal of recycling 150,000 kilometres of line within five years, we've rallied a network of passionate tackle stores to join the cause. 

By breathing new life into old line, we're not just protecting ecosystems – we're crafting a cleaner, healthier world. Since its inception, the Line Recycling Project has already united anglers to recover an astounding 2,040 kilometres of line. Together, we're redefining fishing's impact and shaping a legacy of responsible, sustainable practices for generations to come.
