Product Review: 23 Tatula TW

By Charles West
When it comes to reels it’s hard to go past a baitcaster as my favourite to use. As a long-time Daiwa baitcaster fan I’ve used many different versions of the Tatula since it was first released ten plus year ago. So it was with much excitement that I jumped at the chance to use the latest version, the 23 Tatula TW when it was released.
An evolution of a great reel, I’ve found there’s many things to love about the new 100 sized Tatula. Let’s look at how I’ve found it.
The species that I mainly chasing is Australian bass, and the 23 Tatula TW slotted into my reel line-up with ease, and I’ve used it for a variety of lure casting applications, with throwing topwaters, and metal jigs and spoons getting the lion’s share of the work.
I’ve also used three different line types on it, with PE (aka braid), fluorocarbon, and mono all getting a run depending on what style of lures and fishing that using and doing. Each line is for a particular technique, but I found it didn’t matter what type of line that I used the 23 Tatula TW for it cast like a dream and produced trouble free use regardless of the wind, the conditions and the size and style of lure that I was using. The Tatula’s TWS (T-Wing System) plays a big part in this casting performance and is a technology that certainly removes the casting gremlins that we often found in baitcaster reels of old.
Reel strength and in particular gear smoothness is exceptional, with the reel’s new Hyperdrive Design making the reel bullet proof and ensuring the reel stays as smooth and buttery as the day it came out of the box.
The 23 Tatula Tw 100 has a 6kg drag which is ideal for chasing bass, with its reliable consistent pressure giving you a confident and trusting experience when fighting fish. From fishing heavy cover such as timber where you really need to lean on fish at times, to open flats where the drag setting is lighter and more finesse in nature the Tatula TW shines and performs without faulter.
All up I rate the 23 Tatula TW highly. If you are in the market for a great all-rounder reel at an amazing price, then check them out next time you’re in the tackle store.
