Product Review: Steez Spinnerbaits

Springtime for me means reaction style lures, and one of the first ones that come to mind is the spinnerbait. This is a must have lure for Australian bass in the rivers and on the lakes. They are incredibly versatile and relatively snag proof.

When using spinnerbait to target bass I always think heavy structure battles for these fish. Heavy structure being trees, bushes, and laydown timber; which are suitable places to target bass and their ambush behaviour.

The design of a spinnerbait allows you to cast and retrieve through some of the snaggiest structure, due to the fixed hook. Designed to be able to be rolled over trees and branches without fouling and getting caught up (most of the time).

Daiwa’s Steez Spinnerbait with its compact appearance and flexible wire allows the spinnerbait to get the main blade spinning under the smallest amount of resistance. I find this to be particularly important when you need a spinnerbait to be retrieved slow and kept in the strike zone longer. This design gives plenty of vibration and flash to trigger bites.

When it comes to colours to use for Australian bass the Steez range has you cover from bright to dark and the natural colours in between. I mainly use the natural bait colours in the range, weather it's clear or dirty water. Blade colour combinations will also come into play with the basic rule of thumb being. Gold for dirty water and silver for clear. The colour range has a few different combinations with the willow and small Colorado blades.

The Daiwa Steez Spinnerbait range has two different weights available, 1/4 ounce and 1/2 ounce. These two weights will cover you when targeting bass whether it's fishing shallow or keeping it high up in the water column, to fishing deeper or places that may have current e.g. in a river, creek, or high flow into a dam.

When it comes to the technique of retrieving a spinnerbait it does not come any easier, a cast and wind retrieve is all it takes. You can get more technical if you want to by applying various speed of retrievals and also adding pauses in which will allow the spinnerbait to sink back a little. When fishing deep with a spinnerbait it is good to use the countdown method to keep track of your target depth. Changing up the countdown will allow the spinnerbait to track at different depths in the water column. By doing this you can get your spinnerbait into the strike zone and keep the same count to duplicate over and over once you find the bass location depth. This can also work if you are trying to bump a submerged structure.

The Daiwa Steez Spinnerbait is a perfect all-round lure for Australian bass, with its versatility and colour range. In spring it is a must have lure to add to your collection. Next time you are in your local tackle store or online looking for lures, do yourself a favour and check out the Steez Spinnerbait range.
