Product Review: Wilderness X

By Jesse Rotin
Who doesn’t love a little escape away. I rarely turn down an opportunity to jump in the car or if I’m lucky, hop on a plane and sneak off on an adventure. I don’t know what it is but maybe it’s a way of winding down from city life and as corny as it sounds let down what hair I have left. Now because trout are not commonly found throughout suburbia, they’re a species that screams an expedition for me, as at a minimum trip to find Trout in pristine water is usually just over an hour and the further you go, the prettier it gets. Now I’ve been known to pack a little over the top and have a backpack jammed at the zippers, especially if it’s a last-minute trip. However, in more recent times I’ve toned things down a bit and packed more responsibly, only taking the essentials so l can now focus on what works. A backpack filled with supplies makes more sense as I can be more mobile and venture my way over obstacles like tree trunks, rocks and thick bushland.
Gearing up
The Daiwa Wilderness X was purposely developed for an adventure and built into the range are an array of models to suit just about any species across the country or the globe. The model that stands out for my fishing capers is the Stream Sniper, which is the runt of the range, a touch shorter than the rest of models, which helps cast accurately under and around trees and other hazards throughout the rivers and streams. This rod is 6’6ft in length which means I can also use this rod in open water, for example, on lakes and even estuaries. I’ve traveled and fished this rod on the lakes down in Tasmania to right up into the high country of Victoria.
The Stream Sniper breaks down into 4 pieces and fits into a suitcase or even backpack, ready for any trip. I’ve paired this rod to the Daiwa Kix LT 2000D and this combo alone has gathered some nice captures around the country. However, if this model doesn’t suit your needs, there are plenty of others within the Wilderness X range to choose from, some heavier and even longer options available in both spin and Baitcast. If you’re after a rod to pack in your next adventure then check out the Wilderness X range from Daiwa, I’m sure you’ll find a model to fit perfectly.
