The archer fish is common in tropical estuaries and freshwater streams, and sometimes end up in impoundments where they get trapped behind the dam wall. In exceptional cases the archer fish have been recorded to over 30cm, but is commonly seen and caught at around the 20cm mark.
Archer fish are commonly taken as by-catch by anglers fishing mangrove creeks. These aggressive predators will happily attack lures as big as themselves.
