Coral trout are a demersal species found in tropical shallow reef sytems. There are several similar coral trout species found in Australian waters.
They have a robust, elongated body, with a squared off tail. They have a relatively large mouth with pointed teeth. They can range in colour and pattern depending on the species and environment, and can also change colour during capture.Coral trout can reach about 120cm and 23kg, but are more common around 50cm and 2kg.
Coral trout will eat a variety of common baits used for other reef fish. Fresh flesh baits from fish, octopus or squid are successful, but so are small live baits. Jigs, soft plastics and surface lures are all effective on coral trout. Here are some tackle recommendations for silver perch.
