Indo-Pacific tarpon are one of only two member of the megalopidae family, the other being the much larger Atlantic tarpon. They are a slim-sided fish with large scales and eyes for their size, with large upward-turned mouth for surface feeding. They range in colour from a metallic silver to grey, and have large forked tails.
Tarpon are commonly taken as by-catch for other inshore saltwater targets. They will take small live fish baits, but are more commonly taken by lure anglers. Small hard-bodies, soft plastics, topwater lures and metal lures are likely to get tarpon's attention, especially if they are seen 'rolling' and gulping air, which they are known for doing. Here are some tackle recommendations for tarpon.
