Meet the Team
Callum Munro
Born and raised on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Callum's love for life by the water and the things that lived in it began at a young age. Bitten by the angling bug in his early teens chasing Australian bass with dad at the local lake, it’s an obsession that has followed him into adulthood.
Destined to never be far from the water, today Callum lives the angler’s dream, working as a Fishing Guide and having the opportunity to share his local bass and barra lakes with those who are keen to learn the skills he’s developed over the years.
About Callum
Name:
Callum Munro
Location:
Queensland
Profession/Job:
Fishing Charter Operator
Favourite angling location?
Lake Borumba.
Favourite species to chase?
Australian bass and barramundi.
Favourite style of angling?
I absolutely love fishing Lake Borumba during the winter months, targeting deep-water bass on blades. It’s what got me hooked on fishing in the first place – it’s hard to go past.
When did the love of fishing grab you and was there someone that got you into it?
I started fishing seriously around the age of 12 with my old man. We began fishing Lake MacDonald for Australian bass, and I can still remember catching my first bass there – it measured 51cm! That moment remains one of my favourite memories to this day. It’s been a special passion that Dad and I have shared ever since.
What was the style of fishing that you did when your first started fishing?
I began by casting small soft plastics for Australian bass, working them slowly close to the weed banks with a slow roll retrieve.
What (e.g. escapism, competition, connection with people/nature) does angling give you?
Fishing has been my life – and always will be. Being out in nature, especially on a winter morning with the fog rolling over the lake, brings me peace and always puts a smile on my face. Whether it’s the escapism, the learning, or the connection with nature, nothing beats it.
Who or what inspires your angling?
I’m always inspired to learn new techniques for different species. There’s nothing better than discovering a new method that works – it keeps the passion alive.
What has been your favourite moment/memory in fishing?
I was blessed to compete in the AFC (Australian Fishing Championships) in 2012 and 2013. It was an incredible experience, fishing alongside some of the best bass anglers in the country.
What’s your angling goals for the future?
My main goal is to release my online bass fishing course, along with other digital projects, to help anglers learn more about the species I’ve grown up chasing. I want to share techniques that can help create lifelong memories – just like I’ve shared with my dad.
What advice would you give to new anglers entering the sport?
Get involved in tournament fishing. It’s one of the best ways to learn from the best in the industry and rapidly improve your skills.
What can we do as anglers to make our sport and the industry better in the future?
As the fishing community grows, particularly through social media, I think angling etiquette needs more attention. Giving other anglers space – even if they’re on the spot you wanted – is important. It’s also the perfect excuse to go explore and find new water you might have never discovered otherwise.
What does the Daiwa brand mean to you?
Daiwa is by far the best in the business. But it’s more than just the gear – it’s the people behind the scenes. The Daiwa Australia team live and breathe fishing, and they make you feel like family. I’ll always be grateful to them for believing in me.
