About Jakko

Jakko Davis

Profession/Job:

Spatial Analyst

Favourite angling location?

Remote rivers west of the dividing range.

Favourite species to chase?

Murray cod.

Favourite style of angling?

Throwing hand made swimbaits at large Murray cod.

When did the love of fishing grab you and was there someone that got you into it?

My dad got me into fishing. I’ve loved it for as long as I can remember.

What was the style of fishing that you did when your first started fishing?

Started chasing trout on worms, then carp on corn, then starting with lures for trout in the creeks. It snowballed from there.

What (e.g. escapism, competition, connection with people/nature) does angling give you?

All about the journey for me. Always trying to catch the fish and strive hard to do so but once you’ve achieved it you sit back and realise it really wasn’t the fish you were after. The challenge, the visualisation of what could happen, what could be possible, and the privilege of spending time in remote locations very few others see in their life.

Who or what inspires your angling?

Get pumped and inspired to get out there by a range of different people that push the boundaries to achieve a result. I like things to be hard, if it’s easy than everyone would do it. For example, multi day fishing expeditions down a remote river camping out of a backpack.

What has been your favourite moment/memory in fishing?

Probably my first metre plus Murray cod down the river I grew up fishing.

What’s your angling goals for the future?

Be on the water fishing more than I’m at work.

What advice would you give to new anglers entering the sport?

Do it for the right reasons, for yourself. Don’t fall into the social media trap these days and think you must catch the biggest fish every trip. The beauty of the sport is the time spent doing it, not what you catch. Enjoy the journey.

What can we do as anglers to make our sport and the industry better in the future?

Be respectful of the places we fish. Don’t do the wrong thing. It’s a privilege to live in a country with the access and possibilities we have. Appreciate it and make conscious decisions to leave the areas we fish better than when we arrived.

What does the Daiwa brand mean to you?

Quality products I can rely on. A great team behind the brand, one I’m fortunate and proud to be small part of.
