Lizard Island is a base to some of the best fishing in the world with basically everything you could imagine from jigging to flats to 100kg dogtooth tuna.
Favourite species to chase?
By far my favourite species to target would be giant barramundi.
Favourite style of angling?
Anything visual, watching fish eating a lure is hard to beat.
When did the love of fishing grab you and was there someone that got you into it?
The best memories I have are fishing with my dad, without a doubt he was the one who got me into fishing.
What was the style of fishing that you did when you first started fishing?
Growing up in South Africa the first style of fishing I got into was largemouth bass. Throwing frogs at lily pads and fishing wild creeks were an epic way to get into fishing.
What (e.g. escapism, competition, connection with people/nature) does angling give you?
I’ve always said to people when they ask me “why did you pick fishing”? I've always answered, it takes you to some of the most remote and unique places in the world.
Who or what inspires your angling?
My little family inspires me to fish. Being my full-time job, it keeps me wanting to do better and keep the dream alive and ultimately be a good dad and provider.
What has been your favourite moment/memory in fishing?
Would have to be my dad’s first barra being 130cm, and then 20 years later me finally beating it with a 132cm It was a bittersweet feeling.
What’s your angling goals for the future?
It’s to always try stay ahead of the game with fishing, camera angles and content. It keeps the dream alive for me and the challenge aspect of it always keeps it interesting.
What advice would you give to new anglers entering the sport?
Fish because you love it.
What can we do as anglers to make our sport and the industry better in the future?
As long as we inspire the younger generation to keep getting after it, the industry and future of fishing will be incredible.
What does the Daiwa brand mean to you?
I class Daiwa as the most respected brand in fishing and to be a part of it and an ambassador for the brand means the world to me.
