Favourite angling location?

Too hard to pin down my one single favourite location to fish. Vanuatu is up there. North Solitary Island off Wooli is also a hard place to beat when it’s really on.

Favourite species to chase?

Again, a very hard one to pin down for me as I don’t have one standout favourite. Snapper have probably always been up there, but I get a bit bored of them quickly.

Favourite style of angling?

I’d have to say topwater when it's firing. I love seeing the bite. But again, it’s tricky to narrow down. I mainly fish what's in season locally and enjoy a wide range of styles of saltwater fishing.

When did the love of fishing grab you and was there someone that got you into it?

For Christmas in 1985 when I was 4 years, I got my first fishing rod and reel. The very next day (Boxing Day) I went fishing with my dad for the first time. Fishing from the shoreline at Neutral Bay in Sydney Harbour and using an unweighted chunk of Christmas ham for bait, I landed a monster bream that my dad tells me was a genuine 1kg bluenose. that was the start of it all and I’ve been absolutely addicted ever since.

What was the style of fishing that you did when you first started fishing?

My first style of fishing as a young kid was shore based fishing in Sydney Harbour and the Hawkesbury River. I was definitely a wharf rat and fishing grom.

What (e.g. escapism, competition, connection with people/nature) does angling give you?

I fish for several reasons. I love the connection with the ocean and the outdoors, sharing the experience with friends, and as a slight escape from the daily grind.

Who or what inspires your angling?

I’m lucky to have a lot of close friends that are great anglers and give me inspiration and motivation to get out on the water. At least a few phone calls each day are fishing related.

What has been your favourite moment/memory in fishing?

Fishing has given me so many amazing memories. Seeing my kids catch their first fish would be right up the top of the list.

What’s your angling goals for the future?

There are a few species I’d like to tick off the list but my main fishing related goals involve me travelling more to fish good locations, both in Australia and overseas. Most of my fishing has been in NSW, and I’m super keen to broaden that.

What advice would you give to new anglers entering the sport?

Look after your chosen fishery and fish as sustainably as you can. Learn a bit about the history of what you’re doing within fishing and stay humble.

What can we do as anglers to make our sport and the industry better in the future?

In my opinion we must respect that fish are not getting more plentiful anywhere and we all must focus on fishing sustainability.

What does the Daiwa brand mean to you?

Daiwa feels like a family to me. The staff, ambassadors, and all the people behind the scenes working towards a common goal so well. I’m very proud to represent Daiwa, and it feels like the brand In Australia is on a great upward movement with its fishing gear and importantly the great culture surrounding the brand.
