Black spot tuskfish are a tropical reef dwelling wrasse, common over shallow reefs in northern Australia. They feed heavily on small crusteceans and can crush the hard shells with the peg-like teeth. They sport blue, green and yellow hues with a distinctive black spot just under the dorsal fin about two thirds of the way along their body. Tuskies have been known to reach around 1m and 15kg, but over the reefs they are common around 2-4kg.
Tuskies are a common catch for reef anglers using flesh or crab baits. They are a particularly prized catch for fly fishers who spot them feeding over rubbly flats, and they can also be caught in this way with small soft plastics and crab imitations fished on spin gear. Here are some tackle recommendations for black spot tuskfish.
