Eastern blue grouper (A. viridis) and western blue grouper (A. gouldii) are members of the labridae, and are a species of wrasse that inhabit coastal waters of southern Australia. They have thick-bodies with heavy dark blue scales, large tails and thick lips.
Eastern blue grouper can reach about 1.2m and 25kg, but western blue grouper can grow slightly bigger at around 1.7m and over 40kg. They are commonly encountered at around 50-60cm and 3-4kg.
Blue groper are fished for around rocky headlands with specific baits. Locally collected bait of cunjevoi, abalone, octopus and red crabs are known takers of blue groper, however cooked prawns also turn up good results.
Simple running sinker rigs cast into washy areas around headlands is an effective technique for this species. Here are some tackle recommendations for estuary cod.
