Spanish Mackerel Tackle

Selection

Spanish mackerel are a large mackerel species of the family scombridae, and are common throughout tropical water in the Pacific and Indian oceans. They have long bodies with a forked tail and tail scutes, and a pointed snout. Their mouths open in a scissor-like fashion, and are full of large, pointed teeth. They are usually a vivid blue or a grey colour along their back, with a white or pale blue belly. They have narrow black bars along the length of their body.

Spanish mackerel are highly prized as both a sportfish and a food fish. Trolling dead baits of smily mackerel, garfish and wolf herring is very productive, especially if the bait is rigging to swim or skip. Floating dead bait such as pilchard over reef or near bait schools also yield good results. Lure angler can troll large hard-bodied lures and spoons, or cast stickbaits, poppers, metal lures and more at feeding schools. Spaniards attack topwater lures with such vigour that they can often leap 5-6m clear of the water in an attempt to eat the lure.
