Tailor, also known as choppers or greenbacks (especially for small and large specimens respectively) are a small to medium sized pelagic fish, inhabiting estuaries, bays, surf and occassionally offshore zones. They have a medium body profile, a forked tail, and a large mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. Tailor can reach 120cm and approximately 15kg, but are common at 40-50cm and around 2kg.
Tailor migrations can attract anglers by the hundreds along select sesction of the coastline, which often see anglers standing shoulder-to-shoulder when the bite is on. Dead pilchards rigged on ganged hooks are the traditional method for catching tailor, however cast lures such as soft plastics, metals lures, topwater lures and hard-bodies will also provoke a response from this aggressive feeder. Here are some tackle recommendations for tailor.
