The sort of gear I require needs to be smooth, light and strong, and ideally aesthetic to the eye as well. When I first started using the Sensor Surf 45 SCW 5000LD the first thing I noticed was that it was a larger reel than what I normally use, but it didn’t take long for this reservation to quickly disappear and it’s now one of my favourite reels for distance casting off the rocks for snapper and other bottom species, as well as for beach fishing for jewfish and salmon.

When punching out a bait between 80 and 100 metres you soon appreciate the quick line return and the new Slow Cross Wrap oscillation. The reel does exactly what it was designed to do, allowing ultra long casts and enhance line management on the retrieve. This reel simply allows me to cast further than when using other reels and when distance is often the difference between catching fish and going fishless it’s a feature than really counts when it comes to a surf reel.

The Sensor Surf 45 SCW gives me another 5 to 8 metres on the cast and in some locations this can be the difference between being in the bite zone or being well short of getting a bite.

I also like the long cast spool. You can sense the line flowing off the spool giving you that added casting distance. The quick retrieve enables you to wind your line in fast as you have a lot of line out there when distance casting, and over a duration of a few dozen cast you soon notice the benefits.

At around 550-600 grams in weight, it’s a breeze to use for extended periods and you do not feel that over load of weight as your casting it out. Match it up with 30lb J-Braid Grand, 30 to 40lb FC fluoro leader and of course the right rod like the 13’ three-piece Saltiga Surf 1333H 7-15kg and you will have a setup that you will love!
